The 2x4 exercise is a great place to work on strength, alignment and balance. It is a vertical version of the reformer footwork to really challenge us while standing. The name comes from the 2x4 plank that Joseph Pilates originally taught this exercise on to increase the range of motion, so I encourage you to use one if you have it (they now are wrapped in upholstery as you may have seen in Pilates studios).
If you are new to this exercise or balance is a challenge, I would suggest holding on to something. Doing this in front of the mirror is also a really good way to self correct your alignment.
